TMC, 3 Companies Start Joint Battery-to-battery Recycling

Tokyo, Japan, October 27, 2010—Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), Toyota Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (Toyota Chemical Engineering), Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (Sumitomo Metal Mining) and Primearth EV Energy Co., Ltd. (PEVE) announce the launch of the world’s first* business to recycle nickel in used hybrid-vehicle nickel-metal-hydride batteries for use in new nickel-metal-hydride batteries.

Previously, nickel-metal-hydride batteries recovered by car dealers and vehicle dismantling businesses were subjected to reduction treatment, and scrap containing nickel was recycled as a raw material for stainless-steel manufacturing. Now, with the development of high-precision nickel sorting and extraction technology, materials can be introduced directly into the nickel-refining process, thus achieving “battery-to-battery” recycling.

To carry out the business, TMC has established the Toyota HV Call Center to help recover the batteries, constructed advanced recycling facilities designed for mass production in cooperation with Toyota Chemical Engineering, and is receiving support from Sumitomo Metal Mining concerning the refining of nickel for use in batteries. TMC is also receiving support from PEVE concerning quality assurance in the manufacture of hybrid-vehicle nickel-metal-hydride batteries.

In addition, making use of trucks on return trips from parts deliveries is planned to reduce environmental impact, including CO2 emissions during transport.

The establishment of this recycling system in Japan will accelerate the creation of a sustainable, recycling-based society, a priority measure for TMC, and is a showcase for recovery and recycling technologies as effective means of promoting and reinforcing recycling in response to global resource limitations.

TMC is currently investigating introducing this recycling system overseas.

Toyota Auto Biography

My new ad for Toyota is out now. Assistant animation by Treat's Robin Bushell and Dan Chester. You can find it on their facebook page and youtube page. (my blog is cutting it in half, hence just a selection of stills here!)

Julia

The car in front is a Toyota

Imagine the scene. A man has to drive his wife to the train station before he carries on to work. He's not late, but he is impatient to get her dropped off and get on his way. His route takes him down a country B road, past a school, but it's really early in the morning, there are no children about. He drives along, oblivious to his speed.

He starts to quickly catch the car in front. It's a woman driving, really slowly, she probably can't see over the steering wheel. Oh look, she's got glasses on, probably can't see the road. He can't overtake her. "I know, I'll drive really close to her, make her hurry up a bit."

The bespectacled woman looks in her rear-view mirror. She comments to her husband, who she's also driving to the station: "There's some bloke driving really close behind me, he looks mad!"She checks the speedometer. "Well, I'm doing 33 mph; I'm not going any faster, I'm in a 30 zone. He can just wait".

Man behind is really cross now. Woman is laughing "He's really cross! I'm going to annoy him and drive perfectly all the way to the station".

Which I did.

I didn't realise he was also going to the station though. I actually start to get worried when he followed me into the station car park. At one point I even told my husband he might have to fight for my honour.

My husband laughed: "He just gave you a really dirty look as he drove away".

Perfect. Mission to annoy accomplished.

The morals

1) Don't speed, especially in a school zone. Have you heard of holiday clubs?
2) Don't drive close to my tail. I will antagonise you until you crack.

Toyota's Green Initiative to promote sustainability at black colleges

from Target Market News
The Toyota Green Initiative was recently launched as an environmental stewardship platform for historically black colleges and universities (HBCU). The initiative will give students and alumni the benefits of adopting a sustainable lifestyle. The program will provide multiple touch points to mobilize the collegiate audience to go green including a content-rich website and an HBCU campus tour.

At the hub of the Toyota Green Initiative is the interactive website, www.ToyotaGreen.com, which will provide easy cost-saving tips on going green, eco-conscious articles, videos, campus events and volunteer programs. ToyotaGreen.com features a Promise Drive to secure personal commitments from site visitors on the reduction of their ecological footprint and adoption of a green living philosophy.

"The Toyota Green Initiative is an extension of our key focus to support educational and environmental programs and provides our future leaders the tools and resources to be environmental stewards in local communities," said Jim Colon, vice president of Toyota product communications for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "Continuously working towards sustainable mobility, Toyota strives to preserve the natural environment and establish systems to provide a brighter future for coming generations."

The Toyota Green Initiative Tour will reach 27 HBCU campuses through mobile tour sponsorships of the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and the 2010 BET Black College Tour with a fully-immersive educational experience leveraging unique elements of ToyotaGreen.com. The tour will feature a simulated recycling center and energy-efficient monitors centered around an 18-foot tree installation built of sustainable materials, powered by a solar generator.

Supporting the Toyota Green Initiative are Coalition Members, a collective-based alliance of diverse voices including eco-conscious national thought leaders, influencers and celebrities dedicated to moving communities forward. The Coalition Members are led by Earthseed, LLC, an organization that aims to reconnect people of color to the earth and inspire the transformation of urban communities; and Lance Gross, HBCU college graduate and actor on Tyler Perry's hit TBS sitcom HOUSE OF PAYNE.

The Coalition Members will host Green Lectures on select CIAA campuses and also serve as mentors and judges of the Toyota Green Initiative Contest. To enter to win a one-year lease on a new 2011 Toyota Prius and a tree park for their campus, students must take the Promise Drive and register by submitting a plan at ToyotaGreen.com that will restore, improve or sustain the environment at their local campus or campus' community.

New Toyota Highlander commercial boy- Nathaniel James

These new ads for Toyota Highlander are growing on me... the blond curly haired kid cracks me up for the most part, but really, what kid uses "je ne se quoi" as part of their vocabulary? (Personally, I think the copywriter is pushing it a little.) I've seen "Lost" and "Rolling Up" the most on air, but "Rockstar" is my favorite! (Found them all on YouTube.com/ToyotaUSA.)

Here are the extended versions:
Tag: "Just because you're a parent, doesn't mean you have to be lame."

Rockstar

"Look, he's no rockstar. But he's got a deep inner cooness in there somewhere. Way, way deep down in there."

Get It, Toyota: MyBrownBaby Hearts The "Swagger Wagon"

Just so you know, ain't nothing funnier than watching white folks be "down." Like, seriously? He didn't have to be bald with the glasses, but that helped. So did all that talk about "rolling hard through the streets and the cul-de-sacs," and  "cruising to the playdates lookin' all slick." And the babies as video vixens? Priceless. If Toyota was looking to make me giggle, mission accomplished. I'll never look at the Toyota Siena the same way again. Like, ever.
Of course, the reason we all laugh is because none of us thinks we're anywhere near as corny as these two. But er, um, yeah: Next time you're in the mirror, lean in a little, and conjure up the image of that smirk on your kids' face when you rolled down the windows on your swagger wagon and turned up the volume on Jay-Z's "Dirt Off Your Shoulder."
Uh huh.
*snaps fingers, nods head to the beat*

The Swagger Wagon
Yeah the Swagger Wagon
It's the Swagger Wagon
I gots pride in my ride...

{Don't forget to take the MyBrownBaby Survey—do it and I'll love you long time.}

Toyota to establish a new firm in Egypt to produce SUVs

Mon, 25 Oct 2010

Tokyo - Toyota Motor Corp said Monday it will set up a new company in Egypt to manufacture Fortuner sport utility vehicles, its first production base in Africa.

The new company is to be established in mid-December through a joint venture between Toyota, its group firms Toyota Tsusho Corp and Toyota Egypt SAE. It would have a projected annual output of around 3,000 vehicles from early 2012, the world's largest automaker said in a statement.

The new company would outsource assembly of the vehicles to local firms, using parts mostly made in Thailand, Toyota said.

Toyota began exporting vehicles to Egypt in 1979, and sold about 15,000 vehicles in the country last year, the company said.

David Petraeus, began to notice a new tattoo on some insurgent Afghan fighters. It wasn’t a Taliban tattoo. It wasn’t even Afghan. It was a Canadian maple leaf.

When a perplexed Kilcullen began to investigate, he says, he discovered that the incongruous flags were linked to what he says is one of the most important, and unnoticed, weapons of guerrilla war in Afghanistan and across the world: the lightweight, virtually indestructible Toyota Hilux truck.
