On the GreenBeat: Tesla Opens Fremont Factory, SiOnyx Raises $12.5 Million Top
Here's the stories we're following today on the GreenBeat: Tesla has completed the $42 million purchase of a factory in Fremont previously owned by a Toyota and GM joint venture , the Wall Street Journal reports. CEO Elon Musk says the factory is key to Tesla's future, but revamping the factory will be a big task — the company still needs to recruit and train 500 people, sign up suppliers and refit the facility with new equipment. High-performance photovoltaics company SiOnyx announced they have raised $12.5 million in second-round financing . It uses a laser implant method called "black silicon" that increases performance of light-sensing devices. Smart grid communications company Silver Springs  announced new products that mark a move into demand response , a hot (and getting hotter) segment of the smart grid.  Greentech Media notes this will allow Silver Springs to compete with power management companies like EnerNOC, Comverge and Opower, though the product is limited to customers that already use Silver Springs' networked meters. Energy management company Tendril and Lockheed Martin announced they have teamed up to integrate Lockheed's demand response solution with Tendril's platform. Electric vehicles will have a four to five percent adoption rate by 2020 , plug-in hybrid electric vehicles will be at five to six percent and hybrid electric vehicles will be at 20 percent, according to consulting company PRTM (via Greentech Media). Are you a green executive or entrepreneur? If so, sign up now for GreenBeat 2010 — the year's seminal conference on the smart grid — November 3-4 at Stanford University . World leaders in smart grid initiatives will debate how the new "Super Grid" is creating huge opportunities in cars, energy storage, and renewables. GreenBeat 2010 is hosted by VentureBeat and SSE Labs of Stanford University. Go here for full conference details and to apply for the 2010 Innovation Competition. Register by October 22nd and save 30%. "Zappos of China" OkBuy.com Grabs $17M to Go Shoe Shopping Top
Chinese online shoe retailer OkBuy.com announced yesterday that it has secured $17 million in a second round of funding from Sequoia Capital, Intel Capital, and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. The company, which can be best described as China's equivalent of the online retailer Zappos, says it will use the funding to increase its stockpile portfolio and product range. An increased range of products is necessary since variety directly affects the profitability of e-commerce companies, according to the company's founder Lu Ming. He also notes that OkBuy.com has an experienced buying team. The funding will also go towards team formation and warehouse construction. OkBuy.com has already built large storerooms in Beijing and Guanghzhou, and it also plans to set up more in northeast and east China to have five major storage locations by the end of the year. Sequoia Capital raised $1 billion for two new private equity funds in China earlier this year, and it previously invested $35 million in Zappos before it was purchased by Amazon. (Zappos founder Tony Hsieh said earlier this year that Sequoia pressure directly led to the Amazon purchase.) With OkBuy.com, Sequoia certainly seems to be hoping for repeat success in two major online markets. The site was founded in 2007, and landed $10 million from Sequoia Capital in its first round of funding. via TMCNet Tags: clothes, e commerce, retailer, shoes, shopping Companies: Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Intel Capital, OkBuy.com, Sequoia Capital, Zappos People: Lu Ming
