Eco Factor: New flower species absorbs nitrogen oxide and takes out heat from the atmosphere.
Toyota is regularly being criticized by rivals, who claim that the company’s Prius isn’t as green as other vehicles once the car’s manufacturing process is taken into consideration. The criticism has forced Toyota to think about greener alternatives that could reduce carbon emissions produced during the Prius’ assembly operations.
After installing solar panels on the roof of the plant at Tsutsumi, Toyota has also developed a new species of flowers that can absorb nitrogen oxides and take the heat out of the atmosphere. The flowers are derivatives of the cherry sage plant and the gardenia. The sage derivative’s leaves have unique characteristics that absorb harmful gases, while the gardenia’s leaves create water vapor to reduce the surface temperature of the factory.
Moreover, Toyota is also using energy-efficient lighting, and the lawns of the factory grow specifically developed grass that grows more slowly than conventional grass, which as a result requires mowing just once a year.
